Traditional Chinese Lion Dancing

Traditional Chinese Lion Dance

The Lion Dance has been performed in China for hundreds of years and still remains a powerful image of East Asian culture. The dance is often performed at special events such as weddings, new business openings and New Year. The Chinese believe that a well-performed Lion Dance will ward away evil spirits and bring good luck on the marriage/business/New Year. This idea of luck is portrayed in the dance as the Lion searches for 'The Greens' (this is usually a lettuce, but any green vegetable can be used); these represent the good luck. Once the lion has found 'The Greens' it will spread them throughout the area bringing good luck to everyone.

Lion Dance and Martial Art

It is traditional in China for every Martial Art school to have a Lion Dance Troupe. It is a great honour to be asked to join the troupe, as they are the public face of the school and the most talented students. The Dance itself uses many of the stances found in Martial Arts, specifically Kung Fu. To perform the Lion Dance well you must have strong stances and lively footwork. These abilities are also useful when fighting, so practicing Lion Dance is an excellent way to improve your fighting.

Lion Dance and the SJN Academy

We are very lucky as an academy to have three lions and we are always on the lookout for prospective members to join the Lion Dance Team. Lion Dance is an excellent full body workout; you'll improve your lower and upper body strength as well as your cardiovascular fitness. You'll become more flexible and agile and your Martial Art will certainly improve. Training for the Lion commences every other Saturday at Bromyard Leisure Centre. Anybody wishing to attend should contact Glenn ParryClick to Email Glenn or Telephone: 07974 428052 Lion Dance coordinator.

Lion Dance and Schools

The Lion is a firm favourite with school children. As well as the Lion performance children also get the chance to participate in a workshop where they can learn the Lion Dance and also get to use our specially made 'Children's Lion'. Specific children's Instructors conduct the workshop; they have Enhanced CRB checks, are First Aid at Work trained and are qualified sports coaches. These courses are perfect in conjunction with lessons surrounding Chinese culture and offer many opportunities for the children to let out their creative side such as making their own Lion.
